Redd Count Follow Up
As most of you know each year the Spring Creek Chapter of TU helps the PA Boat and Fish Comm. count the redd's, the event was on Sunday Nov. 18 and to say that the water was not perfect is a gross misstatement! Ray and I counted the same section that we have for the last few years, Section 9a, from the Rock Road parking lot down stream to the bridge at Benner Spring's, our total was 66 defined redd's, now that is about HALF of our normal count, other teams had similar results, but the numbers reflect similar yearly results in most sections. This years water was very high with decreased visibility, so there were sections based on that and the glare on the water surface that made us sure we missed some. One section of Slab Cabin Run in the meadow section had a count of "88" to be sure lower than normal but still good, looks like the fish picked the trib's and the easier side section's to spawn this year. Our sites had really good clean gravel and good flow over them. We should have a good year of reproduction and with all the wood in the stream I believe hold over will be excellent. I will post more results as I get them, the Fish Comm. called off their count below Bellefonte due to high water, this section is really pushing still! , all of the red's we located were empty as were most other sections, the fish spawned earlier than normal and at a very fast pace!
